| A two alarm fire in the town of Sykesville left a family of four homeless, Monday September 17.
The fire in the 7100 block of Norris Avenue was reported at 4:31 am. The owner of the home told firefighters that he and his wife awoke to their alarm clock, and discovered the fire. They were able to wake their two children and escape the home safely.
Sykesville Lieutenant Marc Maczis was the first to arrive on the scene and reported the second story and roof of the home to be heavily involved in fire and requested a second alarm assignment.
Firefighters from Sykesville, assisted by mutual aid crews from surrounding departments in Carroll, Howard and Baltimore counties, mounted an aggressive attack on the fire, which was declared under control at 5:36 am. There were no injuries reported.
The Red Cross is assisting the victims of the fire.
A neighboring home suffered heat related damage to its vinyl siding.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Maryland State Fire Marshal's office. Fire officials say it appears the fire started on the deck and spread up the exterior of the house to the roof.
