At 4:30pm on Sunday March 17th, units from Lisbon and surrounding stations were alerted for the report of a garage fire in the 1200 block of Long Corner Rd in Mt. Airy with reports of an occupant trapped. E41, TNK4, and P45 responded and arrived to find fire showing from a two story detached garage with all occupants accounted for. One resident was transported to an area hospital for smoke inhalation. A tanker task force was requested bringing additional tankers to assist with rural water supply. WS42 responded and established a water supply at the swimming pool behind the house. While crews conducted defensive operations, part of the structure collapsed, briefly trapping one firefighter on the exterior. He was removed within minutes and transported to a local hospital with non life threatening injuries. A brush fire also developed to the rear of the garage, which was handled by units on scene and several brush trucks including B47. Crews operated until approximately 8pm before returning to service. The scene was turned over to the HCDFRS office of the Fire Marshall for investigation.
We received mutual aid assistance from many departments on this incident, along with covering our first due while we were committed. We also wish the injured firefighter a safe and speedy recovery.
