On the evening of May 9th 2008, at 2212 hrs. rescue alarm 4-1 was sounded for the motor vehicle collision with unknown injuries. As the crews were boarding the apparatus, the call was upgraded to MVC with entrapment, adding an additional engine as well as Battalion 2 and EMS 2.

E-43, E-41, and Utility 4 quickly responded with 18 personnel.

The incident was dispatched as Frederick Rd. and Daisy Rd. but was eventually found approximately 1/4 mile on Daisy Rd. Units went on-scene with a single vehicle off the roadway, and two patients on the ground. The vehicle had left the road and contacted a BGE power pole, snapping the pole in half.

The drivers door of the vehicle had over 20 inches of intrusion into the passenger compartment from the contact with the pole, this initially entrapped the driver in his seat. Prior to fire personnel arrival, several "WELL INTENTIONED" civilians pulled the driver from the vehicle and placed him on the ground.

The LVFC would like to remind everyone that victims of motor vehicle collisions should not be removed from the vehicle by untrained persons unless the vehicle is on fire as this could cause additional injury to the patient. Also when reporting an accident to 911, please give a physical street address for the incident which will ensure that emergency personnel will be sent to the correct location.

The LVFC would like to thank the Sykesville Volunteer Fire Department for their rapid response to this incident, as the western end of Howard County was depleted of ambulances at the time of this accident.
